Its Raining Cats & Dogs

Well the rain has surely been coming down in Mission Beach this morning. Yes we could do with a drop but I think we have had enough!!! So rain rain go away....come again another day! We want to go for a skydive!!!!

04 May 2008

Happy Birthday to me

Well its my birthday today and I can't think of a better place to spend it than here in Mission Beach, it is an absolutely fabulous day outside and I can't wait to finish work so I can get out and enjoy it. My day will finish up with a BBQ with friends tonight.....just lovely.

03 May 2008

Its getting busier

As we head into the busy time at Mission Beach we recommend you book ahead for tours and accommodation. There is nothing worse than having a plan for where you want to stay or what you want to do and missing out because there is no availability. Let us here at the Mission Beach Information Station help you out with anything from Cairns to Brisbane.

02 May 2008

Licuala Walk

As it was a pupil free day here in Mission Beach today we decided to go on a picnic. The Licuala Walk is a perfect spot as you can go for a walk first and then eat. We headed off on a quest to see turtles which unfortunately did not come out to play today but we had fun watching the fish swimming around instead. Then we decided to go inland off the main track to head into the water hole, oh how adventurous that ended up being, we had leech bites, wait-a-while scratches, mud all over us and huge grins from all involved as it turned out to be lots of fun indeed. If you have a couple of hours to spare get out there and enjoy the rainforest like we did.

01 May 2008

The Rain Is Back!!

Well I just turned around and looked out the window. Its raining again in Mission Beach. Can you believe it!! After a week of picture postcard weather I was getting used it. Oh well.....I guess we have to have that rainfall to keep Mission Beach looking as beautiful as ever.

30 April 2008

Weekend Weather

The weather in Mission Beach last weekend was just sooo nice. Not a cloud in sight and the water looked as flat as it could possibly be. If only I had a boat to enjoy the reef and tropical islands. Hopefully this weekend will be just as good.

Mission Beach Cafes

Mission Beach certainly is looking up with the addition of yet another two absolutely fantastic cafes in the last year. The 'Mint' cafe at Wongaling Beach and 'Just Saskias' at South Mission Beach. I have dined at both and was suitably impressed. The food is super fresh and the service is Mission Beach friendly!! So if you feel like a lazy start to a Saturday morning with the paper you know where to head!

28 April 2008

Cruising to the Islands

What fabulous fun my friends had on the weekend, they took their boat out for a cruise from Mission Beach to Brooke Island, Hinchinbrook Island and Dunk Island. They even stopped for some fantastic snorkelling in a protected area near Brooke Island. I so wish I was out with them and not working yesterday because is was such a glorious day.

27 April 2008

Flying out

If your leaving Mission Beach and have a flight from Cairns you must remember to co-ordinate your flight with the bus transport, otherwise you end up like the young lady in here today struggling to match them up. You have to add in the time to travel to Cairns, travel to the airport and then allow for your check in time.......not always a good idea to leave it to the day before. Come in to the Mission Beach Information Station and we will help you to sort it!

26 April 2008

I love having friends to visit

I really really love having friends come and visit me here in Mission Beach, unfortunately they were only here for a very short time. We did go out and have a lovely dinner at Nana Thai and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the sun at home. Next time I hope they can stay longer because there is so much I wanted to show them.

25 April 2008

Anzac Day

This morning I woke up bright and early at 4am to attend the dawn service parade in Tully on behalf of both of my grandfathers. It was a nice surprise to see so many Mission Beach locals also attending to pay their respects. This was my first dawn service and definitely won't be my last. =)

Another good reason to love Mission Beach

Today I was lucky enough to witness another good reason for living in Mission Beach. I was sitting down at the beach at Bingil Bay eating my lunch when I saw a mantaray swimming in front of us. It was having a great time swimming backwards and forwards. It was a fabulous treat for my friend and I, and of course we had to make the comment that this is why we do not live in the city.

Early morning walk

I live in South Mission Beach and I must say I was really impressed with the number of early morning walkers that you see out and about. I headed off about 7.15am this morning and I certainly wasn't alone. I can't wait for the high tide time to change though so I can get back out onto the beach, its fabulous checking out the view of Dunk Island as you get your morning exercise.

19 April 2008

Its cooling down in Mission Beach

I just love this time of year in Mission Beach, where it is just starting to cool down. The nights are perfect for sleeping now, and of course the days, well today anyway, are bright and sunny. So come and visit, you can take a walk through the rainforest, snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, skydive, or raft the Tully River to name a few of the wonderful adventures in Mission Beach.

Its good to be back

I've been away in Papua New Guinea for 10 days and I can tell you that even though I had a fabulous trip it really is great to be home in Mission Beach. I always find that being away really does remind you just how good it is to live here, with the beach and rainforest for us to explore and enjoy.

15 April 2008

Hinchinbrook Alternative

If the winds are a blowin' and its too rough to go out to the reef off Mission Beach, a great alternative is to spend a day or more discovering Hinchinbrook Island ! Wednesdays, Friday and Sundays are the days when the boat operates to Brooke Islands. Its rarely called off due to rough conditions because its so protected from the southerly winds.

13 April 2008

Today would to be perfect to be out on one of the dive boats and all of a sudden the phone rings, it's my boss letting me know that he won't be in tonight because he is out sailing! How jealous am I????

11 April 2008

Perfect weather

The weather here in Mission Beach has been fantastic !!! Yesterday i spent all day lazying around the beach reading a good book. Hopefully i'll be out in the boat cruising around the islands tomorrow.

Magical Mission

Its another magical day in Mission Beach. I was travelling along the Mission Beach/Tully road today and there in an old banana paddock was a father Cassowary and 3 of his little chicks!!! Its was such an amazing sight. Mum of cause would have buggered off to let dad take care of the babies ....as female Cassowaries do. Oh dear...they really do have the life!!!

Gateway to Fraser Comfort Inn

Mission Possible

With the weather the way it is at the moment anything is possible in Mission Beach!!! I saw two lots of Cassowaries yesterday out enjoying the sun. On the Mission Beach/ Tully road was a father Cassowaries with 3 young chicks on tow. Of course it is the father of the species who looks after the young. Oh to be a female Cassowary living in Mission Beach. How perfect!!

09 April 2008

School Holidays at Last !!

After a very busy first term at school, holidays have finally arrived . . YAY !! I'm loving being able to spend time chilling out on the beach here at beautiful Mission Beach.

07 April 2008

Moving on

It is a weird sensation to own, love & then sell a business........ I have had the best times at the Mission Beach Information Station.....but eventually there comes a time when you are riding the crest of the wave and realise the ride is almost over and the time has come to try something new. I am thrilled that the new owner, Carolyn has come along with such skill and enthusiasm. Carolyn is going to be a fantastic for the Mission Beach Information Station, she is committed to quality service and is a hard worker. On behalf of the old owners, Steve and Kerrie, I leave this best wishes blog to Carolyn, her new trainee Tamara and to the team - Kallina and Leanne who worked so wonderfully alongside Steve and I. Here's Cheers to the Future! And I am not crying!!!!!

06 April 2008

Going on a holdiay

Its always hard to leave Mission Beach because it is such a great place to live and visit, but this time I think I can do it as I'm really excited about visiting my friend in Papua New Guinea. I will be missing out on meeting the number of visitors who come to Mission Beach during the school holidays, I hope they have as good a time here as I know I will in PNG!

05 April 2008

Saving those memories

When your on holidays you take so many photos, particularly now with the digital cameras, you can just go crazy. When your visiting Mission Beach you can come into the Information Station and save those memories to CD or DVD so you do not lose them, you can even print them if you would like to send some photos home to family and friends.

04 April 2008

I'm Gonna Miss My Brother!!!

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Mission Beach with my 3 Younger Brothers, who now at 18, 14 and 12 are all taller than me and can pick me up and throw me around like I was a football. Now the time has come for Matty,18, to leave the nest with his lovely girlfriend. And I have just realized how much I am going to miss the little rat bag! Party Time Saturday Night!! WOOO

03 April 2008

The sun is shining in beautiful Mission Beach for the first time in weeks. The local dive company Calypso Dive says that today will be ideal conditions for diving. So come on out to the reef for a day you will never forget on The Great Barrier Reef. Mission Beach being the closest town on the Queensland coast to the reef makes it the ideal place to launch from. Happy sailing!!

31 March 2008

A missing mullet in Mission Beach

There is one less guy running around with a mullet in Mission Beach today. Sometimes when you have too much to drink you do things you regret the next morning, and in this case in happened with a pair of scissors. Say goodbye to the mullet!

30 March 2008

Eating out in Mission Beach

I'm a big fan of eating out, breakfast, lunch or dinner doesn't matter. Living in Mission Beach there are so many options. Eating alone, casual catchup or to celebrate a special occasion all are covered, from fish and chips, thai food, italian, pub meal and much much more, so get out there and check out your food options, you won't be disappointed.

29 March 2008

Rain rain go away . .

Just when it looked like the fine weather in Mission Beach was here to stay. . . it started to bucket down with rain !! Let's hope it doesn't last too long.

28 March 2008

Book or not to book ahead

How organised do you need to be when your travelling? I like to be a bit organised and go with the flow as well, but one of the risks with going with the flow is that sometimes you miss out. Here at the Mission Beach Information Station we often come across accommodation and tours that are booked out for a day or even longer. When your on a tight schedule this can sometimes be a bit frustrating, so if there is a particular hostel you want to stay in or a boat you want to sail on then come in and let us help you book them.

Dolphin Beach House

NOOSA: Welcome to 'Dolphins at Sunshine Beach'. Known as the best budget accommodation option in Noosa and located only 5 minutes from Noosa's town centre and 200 metres from beautiful Sunshine Beach. 27 March 2008

Skydive in Mission Beach

I had just had a visit from 4 young ladies who went skydiving in Mission Beach this morning, and didn't they look fabulous. They were all windblown but had the biggest grins on their faces. So if you to want to have fun then come in and visit us at the Mission Beach Information Station and we will book you a skydive with one of the two companies who land here on the beach!

26 March 2008

Fishing in Mission Beach

Last weekend a few friends of mine went fishing in one of the local creeks that flows out onto Wongaling Beach. Surprisingly they caught 2 fair sized barramundi and a couple of mud crabs!! So, if your like me and you like to keep your feet on dry land , why not have a go at one of the local creeks here in Mission Beach.

The sunshine is back

The sunshine has made its way back to Mission Beach, yeah! It is lovely being outside and enjoying the fine weather. A great way is to head out to the Reef for a bit of snorkelling or scuba diving, and luckily Calypso is going out tomorrow and we can help you go with them, just come in to the Mission Beach Information Station and we will make sure you have a fabulous day.

24 March 2008

Nana Thai

When I go out for dinner my first choice is always Thai, the good news is that even in Mission Beach this is an option. I went out to Nana Thai on Saturday night for a friends birthday and the food was fabulous, there were 15 of us eating and we all enjoyed a variety of meals. If your looking for a relaxing night out with good food then this is my recommendation.

23 March 2008

Monster Market is back

Its Easter Sunday and that means the Monster Market is back on in Mission Beach. If your in town get yourself down to MARCS Park between 8am - 1pm. The market will be held on the last Sunday of the month from next month. Go and see if you can find yourself a bargain!

22 March 2008

Skydiving !!

After a very long nervous wait I was lucky enough to go skydiving yesterday . . it was awesome !!!! I am so glad that I finally did it. If your in town , I would highly recommend going skydiving, the views of the reef, islands and rainforest are fantastic. What a great way to see beautiful Mission Beach !

21 March 2008

Trying to calm the nerves !!!

I am booked for a skydive this morning but the weather in Mission Beach can't seem to make up it's mind. The anticipation of not knowing if im jumping or not is killing me !!!

20 March 2008

Driving around Mission

After a failed first attempt I finally got my learners license yesterday, YAY !!!!! Now I can drive around beautiful Mission Beach as much as I like.

Travellers Hideaway

With all day funky tunes and friendly staff it's a great place to chill out and relax. 19 March 2008

skydiving weather

Here in Mission Beach the weather looks like it's finally starting to fine up, hopefully it lasts for more than a day ! A friend and I were due to go skydiving last weekend, unfortunately we had to cancel because of the dicey weather, hopefully this weekend we will have more luck =)

17 March 2008

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to our lovely trainee who is celebrating her sweet sixteen in Mission Beach today, unfortunately her planned present, a skydive, may not happen today due to the rain that is falling as we speak, I guess we will have to wait a bit longer to hear how she enjoyed landing on the beach in Mission Beach.

15 March 2008

Council Elections

Residents of Mission Beach are voting for the first time on the new amalgamated council. The Johnstone & Cardwell Shires have joined together to become the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
Good luck to all the running candidates. May Mission Beach reap the benefits of the new Council in coming years eg: A new swimming pool!!!

14 March 2008

Stuck in Mission Beach

Its been a bit wet here in Mission Beach today. The roads between Tully and Mission Beach and El Arish and Mission Beach were cut off with flood waters. We had some very soggy and not too happy travellers.......but hey....who could complain about being stuck in beautiful Mission Beach for an extra day. All roads are clear now and traffic has returned to normal.

Sending Freight

If you are sending freight on the bus you really need to think about wrapping it carefully. We take lots of care with your parcel here in Mission Beach but cannot be sure if others will do the same. Personally I am a real bubble wrap fan!

13 March 2008

Sending photos home for Mum

One of the things I have found with travellers, particularly the girls, is that they love to send home photos to Mum, just so she can see that you are safe and well. Here at Mission Beach Information Station you can print your photos, download them to email or save to a disk. Come in and make your Mum happy!

12 March 2008

Lovely cool weather

I must admit to really enjoying the cooler weather we have here in Mission Beach at the moment. I went for a walk on the beach at Bingil Bay with a friend last night and it was just lovely, a cool breeze was blowing the whole time. So if your a local or visitor get out there and enjoy the outdoors.

11 March 2008

Enjoy Life

Life is fun in Mission Beach. Even in the wet season it is still great to stroll along the beach, through the rainforest or to laze around reading a book or 5!

09 March 2008

Mum is coming to visit

I have been spending the last 18 months telling my family how wonderful Mission Beach is, and now my Mum is coming to see for herself. I'm really looking forward to taking her on a trip to Dunk Island, we will get out and do some of the rainforest walks, a walk on the beach will be a must and she may even be interested in a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. May won't come around quick enough for me!

08 March 2008

Enjoying the Whitsundays

We now have up-to-date information on sailing the Whitsundays. One of the owners of Mission Beach Information Station has just returned from a fabulous trip on Whitsunday Magic, a beautiful boat if the photos are anything to go by. Even though the weather wasn't great he still had a really really good time, and as he was sailing around he spotted many of the other boats we can help you book. Come in and see us before you leave Mission Beach!

07 March 2008

Road flooding

Last Sunday my attempt to make it from Mission Beach to Cairns was cut short at El Arish. The rivers were rising, visibility was nil and it would have been impossible for me to make it home again. Luckily the rain has eased and the roads are now open, i might have better luck this sunday.

Having some perspective

One of the things we understand here at Mission Beach Information Station is just how important your holiday is, that there has been a lot of time, effort and money gone in to the planning and actual event. We also know that sometimes the best laid plans go awry....this is where its really important not to lose perspective, to go with the flow, to be flexible and be willing to change your plans at the drop of a hat, because you are on holidays and you want to have fun!

06 March 2008

Job well done

Well done to Kerrie from Mission Beach Information Station who managed to calmly get everyone on a special Greyhound bus that came from Cairns to Tully to take passengers back to Cairns. She made the drivers job easier and everyone was pleased to be getting on with their holiday. As wonderful as Mission Beach is when you've gotta, you've gotta go.

05 March 2008

Be careful on the roads

If your traveling between Cairns and Mission Beach then please be careful. The has been a lot of rain about over the last 4 days and the roads are flooded in places, and wet and slippery everywhere. Please keep yourself updated via RACQ and local visitor centres.

Just Saskia

JJ Backpackers

CAIRNS: Small, safe, clean and friendly backpackers

Where is Dunk Island

Are you out there Dunk Island? Sometimes when it rains hard in Mission Beach we loose Dunk Island. Apparently it is still out there but you cant see it from the mainland! We do weather well up here, loads of rain and then beautiful blue skies......gotta love the tropical north.

03 March 2008

Wet inside and out

Wasn't yesterday an interesting day, Mission Beach was flooded in for a short period with both the Mission Beach to Tully Road and the Mission Beach to El Arish Road flooded. This caused a little bit of grief with the Greyhound and Premier buses not being able to get through.......A friend though had quite an experience, her flooding happened inside, their fish tank burst and they came home to water and fish all over their house, luckily it must have just happened because they were able to save most of the fish, not so lucky with all the cleanup though of course. Welcome to the wet season!

02 March 2008

Living in Far North Queensland

I went for a walk with a friend last night around South Mission Beach, it really was lovely looking at how people set up their houses to enjoy the best of living in Far North Queensland. The beach and Dunk Island views are particularly fabulous, and even though we did get a little bit wet as we meandered along it was still really pleasant, because rain in the tropics does not mean cold, which is a definite advantage over living down south.

01 March 2008

Heading south

If your heading south from Mission Beach and are planning a boat trip from the Whitsundays or a package including Fraser Island, then please come and see us. It seems that its quite busy down in Airlie Beach at the moment and I have had two sets of customers already this morning who have missed out on the boat they wanted because it is booked out. We at Mission Beach Information Station can hopefully help you to not miss out!

29 February 2008

Hard to leave Mission Beach

When you live in Mission Beach you dont often leave. It is one of these quaint pretty places that brings easy living. We are going to start thinking about a family holiday, but where do you go when you live in paradise...... we are thinking of the theme parks near Brisbane.....personally I am not sure abit to ritzy for me but I think the family will be thrilled. Any thoughts!

28 February 2008

Computers

We have a great family of computers here at the Mission Beach Information Station. I am afraid to say though that their cousin which lives at our house is not so well behave. It is being naughty and refusing to connect to the net, amazing how isolated we all feel!

Why blog

Why am I blogging.....I do wonder if anyone enjoys our on line diary about Mission Beach? We see it as a way of keeping Mission Beach in the minds of travellers and as a way of keeping people up to date with the real world of travellers to our beautiful beach.

26 February 2008

Stingers Suck

Stingers actually sting not suck, but being stung sucks! So wear protection. We no longer ride bicycles without helmets and we dont drive in a car without a seatbelt. The time has come folks.... dont go swimming in the tropics without a stinger suit (also called a rashie, they are made of lycra which can look way cool and I hear Billabong & Roxie are bringing some chilled looking suits). So when you are in Mission Beach use protection (day and night!!!). And if you are thinking that sucks, remember we dont have great white sharks and they do way way more than sting (and I am not sure how you would protect against them, byo shark cage perhaps!)

25 February 2008

Being sun smart

One thing you have to remember when living in or visiting Australia is that you must be sun smart. We have an english visitor to Mission Beach who went for a 1/2 hour run at 8.30am in the morning, she didn't think she would need sunscreen.......alas she did. I am happy to say that her next decision though was clever, she stayed out of the sun that day and the next, and then went to the Great Barrier Reef and had an absolutely fabulous trip with Calypso....and she didn't get sunburn again, good on her.

24 February 2008

Leaving Mission Beach

Life is all about change, and a big one is when your friends or family move town, or state or even country for that matter. Last night was one of those occasions, we got together for a BBQ around the pool to say goodbye to great friends who are leaving Mission Beach for the Sunshine Coast. We really hope that they will come back into our lives in the near future, and wish them well for their future adventures.

23 February 2008

Mission Beach Information Station

You may not know it but Mission Beach Information Station offers many administration services, as well as the internet, photo teller, tour desk, accommodation bookings and bus tickets. I have a lovely lady in today who has requested lots of her Cyclone Larry photos to be scanned, so she can email them to her son for his school project, isn't she a good Mum!

22 February 2008

A happy ending

One of our current favourite community events in Mission Beach is the Trivia Night at the Mission Beach Resort, raising funds for the State School. Chicken Parmi are sad to say goodbye to two of its team members this week, we are happy to say that we sent them off in style with a victory, which came down to the last round. Trust me if you are at a loose end on a Wednesday night then come on down, we think its great fun!

21 February 2008

Pink Guide

Have just seen our advert in this years PINK GUIDE. It looks great! The Mission Beach Information Station is an inclusive, friendly and helpful business.

19 February 2008

Absolute North Chaters - Hinchinbrook Island/Zoe Bay Camping Transfers

Camp on beautiful Hinchinbrook Island. The Zoe Bay site is one of the most remote and spectacular. Boat transfers, full camping kit and national parks permits.

Skydive and weather

We are often asked what is the best time to go skydiving......there is no right or wrong time of the day. With the changeable weather in tropical regions such as Mission Beach it is possible for the rain to pour down one hour and then to have blue skies next! Staying inside on rainy days

I've always found that when it rains all I want to do is snuggle up on the couch with a good book or movie. It doesn't matter whether I'm living in Mission Beach or Melbourne, the rain still gives me the same excuse for being lazy. The best thing though in Mission Beach is that if you want to go outside you can because its certainly not cold rain.

Little fish

Should have seen the local kids of Mission Beach doing their first SCUBA dive in the Calypso pool last weekend. It was great fun, big wide eyes and lots of smiles!

Spotting a Cassowary

We have quite a few people come in to the Mission Beach Information Station asking if cassowaries do really exist because they haven't been able to spot any . The answer to this is yes, cassowaries do actually exist. I always seem to spot them on my way to and from school, at about 8 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. A great way to see a cassowary in it's natural environment is to go on one of the many rainforest walks Mission Beach has to offer.

Being Brave

When you have long hair getting it all cut off can be quite a traumatic experience, but we have a brave soul here at Mission Beach Information Station. The long pony tail that had been growing freely, only being cut once in 5 years, has now gone, and he looks fabulous. Yeah for being brave!!

Nature at its best

If your traveling from Cairns to Mission Beach then there are two great spots to stop along the way. Babinda Boulders and Josephine Falls. I had the pleasure of visiting both spots yesterday and it really was lovely, I only wish I had my swimmers so I could have swam in the cool water pools. There are signs directing you off the Bruce Highway to both locations, and there are picnic tables and toilets at both, so take the time to enjoy two of natures wonders.

Kids Seal Club

A group of local kids in Mission Beach had a fabulous time on Sunday, they took to the pool in complete SCUBA gear and got to blow some bubbles. Awesome, image being 8 years old and sitting on the bottom of the pool chilling with you mates, doing somersaults, doing hand stands & generally having fun! This is the start of their SCUBA career - go for it. SCUBA diving on the Great Barrier Reef is amazing. Thanks Calypso Dive!

Its all looking pretty lush

Its all looking pretty green and lush here in Mission Beach. After enjoying a couple of days of rain the plants and trees are looking gorgeous. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it really is amazing how fabulous the rainforest looks when its wet. If your looking for something to do on your holiday or even as a local with a couple of hours to spare, go for a walk on one of the many tracks in and around Mission Beach, you won't be disappointed, and you may even get to see a cassowary.
