17 August 2008

A good time was had by all

Well it looks like the Mission Beach State School should be very pleased with the Banana Festival. When I arrived yesterday afternoon there were lots of people enjoying the stalls, the climbing wall and jumping castles as well as just lounging around in the sun. The food and drink vendors looked to be doing a roaring trade, and all that means great things for the School. Oh and of course I always love the fireworks too. So well done to all those that put in the hard yards to make it happen!

07 August 2008

Eating out!

There are so many restaurant, cafe and bar options in Mission Beach that sometimes its hard to choose where to eat. Last night I dined at Jetty's Cafe & Bar with friends, and all three of us enjoyed our meals. It is great to be spoilt for choice I think, so if your a visitor or a local to Mission Beach and don't want to cook then you don't have too!

It happened again to two girls today, all of their gear was left on the bus, not just their backpacks but their bags with passport, wallets etc. Not a fun thing to happen while on holidays.

01 August 2008

School Camp =)

Tully once again proved why it's been named the wettest town in Australia. It's a pitty the rains had to fall whilst I was on school camp at Murray Falls ( approx. 1hr from Mission Beach) . Our camp ground was almost evacuated because of rising rivers and we were all cold and wet for 4 days. By far the highlight of the camp was attempting to float home-made rafts (with 20 kids on each) down the swollen Murray River. Most of us were very unsuccessful as parts of our rafts floated away before we could actually get on them. Apart from the rain, the camp was a great success and I would recommend Murray Falls to anybody looking for a nice place for a swim, picnic or camping spot.

31 July 2008

Big day yesterday

I had a friend call me to ask if I could help her out, she needed me to drive from Mission Beach to Cairns, catch a charter flight to Georgetown ( inland ) and then drive the 4.5hrs back to Cairns to return a rental car, and then drive home to Mission Beach. It was a big day but quite fun, particularly as it was a small 4 seater plane and I was able to sit next to the pilot as I was the only passenger, how cool is that!

30 July 2008

South Johnstone Butchers

Coming back to Mission Beach from the Atherton Tablelands on Monday, I came through the little town of South Johnstone. This was excellent I thought at I pulled up at the butchers there. Its one of the best butcher shops in Australia. He smokes his own hams and meats and salamis are made on the premises. Mmmm...mmmm Oh yeh...my double smoked pork chops were a real hit last night. I will be going back to stock up sooner rather than later!!!

29 July 2008

Today they told me that this is probably their last time in as they have to head off to Sydney on Sunday. I can't believe how quickly their six week visit has gone, its easy to spend that much time in such a beautiful spot...... thats why we live here.

24 July 2008

Its Monster Market time at Mission Beach again this weekend. They are always fantastic. Lots of local produce available. 21 July 2008

Dogs and Coconutz

Did you know that most dogs like eating coconuts. I hadn't had a coconut for a while so I strolled down to Mission Beach where there is always an abundance of coconuts. Brought a few home and opened them up and the dogs just zoomed on in for their share. Even my normally meat eating canines love it.

15 July 2008

The Python & The Green Tree Frog

I was amazed yesterday to walk into my outdoor bathroom and hear the last crying croak from my resident green tree frog who has been living in the laundry tub for the last year or so. Yes I did cry but as the most amazing metalic blue tree python slithered back out to the forest with my friend half consumed I did witness the beauty of this place we live in right there.....in my bathroom!! Mission Beach still has that natural beauty and all the critters within it (except my green tree frog). I hope we can keep it that way for a while yet.

Rain rain go away

It's the first day of a new school term for me and it's bucketing down here in Mission Beach. I would much rather be watching movies in bed.

14 July 2008

Good places to eat

There are so many eating options here in Mission Beach. Friends and I went out to Scotty's Beach Bar & Grill ( or just Scotty's to the locals ) last night and really enjoyed out meals. The variety allows for all tastes with lasange, reef & beef, fish, rissotto and lamb all good choices for us. Save yourself the trouble of cooking and doing the dishes and eat out at one of our great restaurants.

13 July 2008

The Kennedy Walking Track

Well with the glorious weather that has finally been bestowed upon us this weekend, I think I shall pack my backpack and head down the Kennedy Walking Track. This is one of the most picturesque walks that Mission Beach has to offer. Starting from the Southern end of South Mission Beach, the 7km track winds around headlands and across deserted beaches to the Hull River mouth.
This walk is a must if you have a day to spare in Mission Beach. Come into the Mission Beach Information Station for maps and directions

10 July 2008

Watching the rafters

Yesterday we drove from Mission Beach to Tully Gorge to watch the white water rafters. There is a lookout where you can go to see them, and with 21 rafts going past it was quite a sight to see. The gorge itself is fabulous and we have photos to prove it. Topped off with a picnic right on the river further down and the day was just perfect. Come into the Mission Beach Information Station and I can tell you exactly where to go so you can see them too.

09 July 2008

Come in and visit us when you get to town.

05 July 2008

Pandanus Beachfront Apartments

Friends of mine are staying here in Mission Beach, they have the whole family with them, 8 adults and 5 children. I found the perfect accommodation at Pandanus Beachfront Apartments, they have the complex to themselves and the children are quite comfortable roaming from one apartment to another. Its across the road from the beach and close to a park with a playground, and of course I also ordered beautiful sunny weather for them, how nice of me!

04 July 2008

Seeing a Cassowary

My Mum came to visit me in Mission Beach for 10 days at the end of May, and I am sad to say that she did not get to see a cassowary. Yesterday I was driving to Cairns and managed to see one walking along the side of the road and thought about how unlucky Mum was not to see this most amazing animal that we locals here at Mission Beach are so proud of.

18 June 2008

Roundabouts!!

Well it looks like Mission Beach has its first roundabout. Wow!!! We really are becoming modernized here! When do we see the first set of traffic lights? Hopefully not in my time....

17 June 2008

The Elandra at Mission Beach

For those who know Mission Beach you may remember visiting or staying at The Horizon, it has had a face lift and has come back as The Elandra at Mission Beach. From the accounts I have heard so far it is quite fabulous, so if your in town and looking for a great place to stay or would like to dine out then the new look restaurant is a very good option on both counts.

16 June 2008

Not visiting Mission Beach

I will be driving from Mission Beach to Airlie Beach this weekend because my friend from PNG is competing in the Outrigger Regatta on Hamilton Island. I'm disappointed that she can't visit Mission Beach while she is back in the country, as there is so much I want to show her about this fabulous place I live in, oh well hopefully next time.

15 June 2008

Walking in Mission Beach

I was shown a great walk in Mission Beach yesterday. You start at the end of Bingil Bay beach and walk through the rainforest around Ninney Point and on to Brooks Beach. As it isn't a National Park walk it is not maintained so in places it has quite an off road feeling but was absolutely fabulous all the same. Next time we are going to pack a picnic to enjoy on Brooks Beach, and I think most of the time you would have it all to yourself.......just lovely!

14 June 2008

A new addition to town

We have a new addition to Mission Beach, friends of mine had a lovely baby boy yesterday, after a bit of a wait they are really pleased to welcome him to the family.....Congratulations!

Back in Mission Beach

Well I am back in beautiful Mission Beach after a fantastic weekend sailing in the Whitsundays. Its nice there but I reckon you can't beat Mission Beach. Its so laid back, tropical and untouched (so far). Lets hope it stays that way!!

09 June 2008

Little bit of rain around

There has been a little bit of rain around in Mission Beach for the long weekend, not enough to stop people from enjoying themselves though. The good thing is that even if its wet its not cold and thats what I love about not living down south anymore.

08 June 2008

Being prepared

I have chatted before about when to be prepared and when not to be.....yesterday I had a situation where I believe perhaps they should have been. I received a call at about 3pm from a family of 2 adults and 6 children travelling to Mission Beach, arriving at 7pm and wanting accommodation for 1 night. Now there are 2 things which make this tricky, 1 is fitting 8 people in and the 2nd is doing so on a long weekend where most of the accommodation is already fully booked.......a time where being prepared would have been good I think as I was unable to help them.

06 June 2008
