Arcadia Beach Guest House Magnetic Island

A friend and I had the pleasure of staying at the Arcadia Beach Guest House on Magnetic Island on the weekend. Lots of good things about this place, first one being that its directly across the road from the beach so fantastic views to enjoy, only interrupted by the mokes, catamarans and kayaks you can use or hire. Next thing is that they have accommodation to suit everyones needs, there are studio suites, ensuite doubles, budget rooms, dorm rooms, safari tents and the self contained beach house. We stayed in the self contained Alma Bay Room, which was perfect for us as we prefer our own bathroom. Although even the share bathrooms have a bath so this is a bit of a treat for the backpackers as most hostels don't have them. There are two great communal kitchen lounge areas for everyone to use, and a wood-fired pizza oven. The character of the building lends alot to the feeling of hanging out in your own Beach House especially as you sit out on the front deck enjoying a cold drink or swimming in the pool that overlooks the beach. The other great thing for us is that we timed it so that we were there for BBQ night, it starts with drinks on the deck where you get to sit around with the staff and other guests getting to know each other, then you enjoy a meal that feels like your eating at home but you haven't had to cook it yourself. I heard that one of the biggest problems is that guests don't want to leave, they are always booking extra nights, now that is a good problem for them to have, and I can definitely see how that happens! Bicton Hill

Mission Beach has some great walking tracks, and one of my favourite is Bicton Hill. Magnificent views! This circuit track is 4km in total taking approx. 1 ½ hours to complete. The walk up takes you through breathtaking rainforest and the view at the top is worth every step!

Where to eat in Mission Beach

Where to eat in Mission Beach, is a common question we get from visitors. We are lucky here that there are many great restaurants and cafe's located across the villages. I went out last night for a friends birthday and again had a fabulous meal at the new Spicy Thai Hut in Wongaling Beach, great food, great company and perhaps a drink or two was enjoyed by all. I can strongly recommend them for locals and visitors alike!

Etty Bay

Yesterday I went for a lovely drive from Mission Beach to Etty Bay. It was only 50 minutes and then you end up at a gorgeous beach at the Etty Bay Caravan Park. There is a takeaway shop for lunch and dinner, a stinger net so you can swim year round, and a resident Cassowary who wanders around the park at leisure. We had a great time sitting at the beach enjoying a glass of bubbly! Come into the Mission Beach Information Station and we will show you how to get there.

Cyclone Olga

Well we have our second cyclone of the season in FNQ, Cyclone Neville fizzled out and now Cyclone Olga looks like she will hit land this afternoon up near Cooktown. We have been lucky here in Mission Beach with only a bit of wind and rain around today, but we are certainly thinking about the people who will be affected up north. If your traveling around then please be careful on the roads!

They are located in Wongaling Beach and you can dine in or takeaway. So I strongly suggest you go in and check it out!

My sister and brother-in-law came to visit me here in Mission Beach. On Saturday we had a fabulous day with Coral Sea Kayaking. We sea kayaked over to Dunk Island, lunching and snorkelling on Coconut Beach on the far side of the Island. The wildlife put on a bit of a show for us, we saw turtles, sting rays, flying fish and a small shark. It was awesome to visit Dunk Island under our own steam, there is a real sense of achievement when you get back to South Mission Beach at the end of the day. This is one tour I can strongly recommend!!!!!

Lacey Creek Walking Track

A favourite amongst the locals in Mission Beach! The track is about 7 km out of town, is 1.2km long, and extremely beautiful. Informative signage, fish viewing platform and a chance of seeing the elusive cassowary make this a terrific walk. Toilet and picnic facilities available. The Rainforest did suffer significant damage from Cyclone Larry (2006) which provides visitors with a unique opportunity to see the rainforest's regeneration process.

If you live in or are visiting Mission Beach then its worth going for a drive to look at the fabulous Christmas Light displays. Some people have gone to a lot of trouble to make their houses incredibly festive. Last night I went for a walk around South Mission Beach and there are 2 houses in particular who look just wonderful. Get out there at check them out, you won't be disappointed.

Aussie Drifterz offer tubing on the Behana Creek. If your staying in Mission Beach then its about a 2 hour drive to Cairns where you can meet up with Peter for a great afternoon drifting along in your arm chair or donut tube. If your swimming outside the enclosures then please make sure your wearing a stinger suit...........and have fun!

On Tuesday we enjoyed a leisurely drive from Mission Beach to Innot Hot Springs, with a stop at the The Falls Teahouse in Milla Milla for a lovely lunch. We spent lots of time in the thermal pools at the Innot Hot Springs Holiday Village, although we didn't venture out to dig our own hole in the sand to enjoy the springs out in the creek. Save that for next time! I can recommend this as a great mini break, there are motel and 1 bedroom units, powered and unpowered camping available as well as Day Guest entry to the pools.

Mission Reef Resort is an elegant and luxurious resort-style accommodation, that is less than 100 metres from the beach. Mission Beach is lucky enough to have many wonderful restaurants and cafes. Last night I went to Jetty's Restaurant & Wine Bar to celebrate a friends birthday. We had such a lovely night, the food was delicious, the service excellent and of course the company was great. If your a local or a visitor to Mission Beach make sure you get out and enjoy the great food on offer!

We needed the rain

It's lovely to drive around Mission Beach and see the green lawns again, we certainly needed the rain we have had over the last week or so. A walk in the rainforest would be a great idea right now, if your a visitor or even a local get out there and enjoy the local walks. Up close with a Cassowary

Mission Beach is known for its Cassowary population, but those of us who live here know that seeing one is not an everyday occurrence. During the week I was lucky enough to see a juvenile cassowary up close.....he or she was very curious indeed. I always think if I see one then its going to be a good day! So if you live in or are visiting South Mission Beach then keep a watch because you may be lucky too!!!
